We are using the great myBB software for our forum. It is open source and can easily be self-hosted.

As this is a new territory for us too, excpect more changes in the forum itself. We are also grateful for every kind of feedback!

Why myBB?

• We like the nostalgic flair and the oldschool style
• Also the possiblity to nest forums in multiple levels is a great feature
• The setup was easy and runs on a small server
• The configuration is easy

Why not Discord?

As recent events have shown that the trust in services sometimes can be destroyed quite quickly by bad management decisions we have a hard time deciding which service will still be used in the future. And as we don't want to bet our communities well-being on the decisions another company makes we chose to self-host a small forum.

Future alternatives

Flarum

We like the modern look and the responsive design.

Discourse

While many big communities choose Discourse for their forums, it feels to much for our current community. If the need arises in the future and myBB can't handle the forums any more we might take another look at hosting a Discourse server
